Robot Cop ends tense Massachusetts siege

The long-anticipated robot police are in action at last. Old-fashioned fleshy cops in Hingham, Massachusetts, were forced to call in mechanised assistance on Saturday as a tense siege situation spiralled out of control.

"A five-hour standoff between police and a 23-year-old Hingham man barricaded inside an apartment ended...thanks to some help from a robot," reports the local Patriot Ledger.

KUKA Robotics Announces Release of PalletTech Software Version 3.5 ...

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich.--KUKA Robotics Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of industrial robots, today announced the release of its PalletTech palletizing software version 3.5 and will show a sample palletizing demonstration utilizing the software at ATX South in booth 2309. The new version of the company's industry leading palletizing software features enhanced capabilities for complicated robotic palletizing applications including augmented gripper support and multiple orientation pick up. The software is a suite of application development and run time tools that reduces engineering and development time and enables the out-of-box implementation of complicated robotic palletizing applications.

"Palletizing customers with complex palletizing applications have been demanding more flexibility to accommodate their processes," said Stuart Shepherd, president of KUKA Robotics Corporation.

R2-D2 beat you?

BALTIMORE ORIOLES CLOSER Chris Ray had just given up a game-winning grand slam to New York's Alex Rodriguez in a game on April 7.

Ray's catcher, Alberto Castillo, had a reasonable explanation.

"Chris is a young fellow, and he's learning his position right now as much as he can," Castillo said. "He's not a computer out there."

But imagine if the O's did have a computer out there on the mound -- perhaps a humanoid robot.

Such a scenario sounds like something only a science fiction writer could fathom, but machines may become our athletes of the future.

Engineers at places like Carnegie Mellon are attempting to design robots that can play soccer just as well as -- if not better than -- the most skilled people. In fact, they have already invented robot soccer players that compete in events like the RoboCup World Championship.
